GRANT PROGRAM

Since 1985, the Cinnabar Foundation has provided grants to charitable organizations, schools and university programs engaged in conservation within Montana and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. To date, the Foundation has funded more than $9.6 million in conservation programs and projects. Click here to learn more about our granting history.

COMPETITIVE GRANT PROGRAM
The Foundation has one annual funding cycle for competitive grants. The deadline for grant applications is March 31. Applicants will be notified of their grant status in early July. Competitive grants are awarded as challenges requiring a 1:1 match. An organization that is offered a challenge grant will be required to raise an equal amount of funding from other sources in order to claim its Cinnabar award.

The Foundation offers competitive grants in two categories:
  • Special Project Grants provide funding for specific programs, projects and campaigns. Schools and university programs may submit only special project grant applications. These awards range from $1,000 to $15,000.
  • General Operating Grants are unrestricted funds to help cover the essential expenses of running nonprofit organizations. These grants are offered by invitation only. Grants range between $1,000 to $15,000.

NON-COMPETITIVE GRANT PROGRAM
The Cinnabar Foundation is sometimes able to provide supplemental grants to our constituent organizations. When this circumstance first arose, the Cinnabar board reflected on a classic comment often made by Len and Sandy Sargent when they were thanked for their generosity: “We only wish we could have done more.” In that spirit, and with their precedent as our inspiration, the board makes these “extra” grants as funds allow.

The board does not solicit or accept applications for these grants:
  • Sargent Legacy Grants reward outstanding conservation work over the course of years.
  • Tawney Opportunity Grants help organizations meet unpredictable challenges or seize opportunities that, while consistent with the Foundation’s goals, arise outside the Foundation’s regular granting cycle. These grants are intended to provide unanticipated bursts of enabling energy — just as its namesake Phil Tawney did.
