SARGENT STEWARDSHIP RECIPIENT

1999          JIM JENSEN

The first recipient of the Len and Sandy Sargent Stewardship Award, Jim Jensen was recognized for his influence on Montana’s regulatory process, defending our constitutional guarantees, requiring mined land reclamation, and prohibiting failed technologies during his tenure as executive director of the Montana Environmental Information Center.

Since its inception MEIC has been a leader in Montana environmental activism and has performed its tasks with courage, competence, enthusiasm and persistence, all the while admired by the Sargent family and the Cinnabar Foundation.

Jim not only tried hard, he succeeded against tremendous resistance. He persisted when others tired. He prevailed when it would have been easy to falter, and through a ballot initiative was able to successfully bring the case to the highest authority in our democracy — the people.

Jim’s recognition for outstanding environmental achievement included a $5,000 Special Award grant to the Montana Environmental Information Center.
